Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of robotassisted therapy to improve upper limb and cognitive function and performances of activities of daily living(ADL).
Methods : We analyzed 6 month followup data of 22 chronic stroke patients including 11 experimental and 11 control patients. Experimental group underwent the robotassisted therapy using Armeo¨ÞSpring and general occupational therapy. Control group underwent only general occupational therapy. Outcome measures were used Manual Muscle Test (MMT), Passive Range of Motion (PROM) for upper extremities function. KoreanMini Mental State Examination (KMMSE) and Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) for cognitive function. KoreanModified Barthel Index (KMBI) for ADL performances.
Results : After intervention, 11 experimental patients significantly increased muscle strength, and showed tendency of improvement PROM and general cognitive function, not statistically. Both of experimental and control group were showed improvement of ADL performances.
Conclusion : Robotassisted therapy based on virtual reality would be useful and effective intervention to upper limb and cognitive function and performance ability of ADL in chronic stroke patients.
